INTRODUCTION

A.    Background of the Problem
As an International language, English has been taught earlier to our students in Indonesia in order to provide them with enough basic skills. Indonesia's curriculum of education puts English as compulsory subject that must be taught for students since at elementry school up to university. Nowadays, the students should master English in order to face globalization era. They need this language in many sectors of their lives, such as in searching information and improving their career. The students who have finished their education need English for searching a job because many companies require their employee to speak and write in English.
Language learning is a process which involves some factors such as teachers, students, materials, curriculum, motivation, etc. Successful learning is not only viewed as dependent upon the teacher’s control and management of what take place in the classroom, but it also judged by what learners do to achieve successful learning.

Learning English requires the students to master the four skills, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. Reading is very extremely important tool for students to get knowledge and information. They can get information and knowledge from textbook, newspaper, web internet, and magazines that they read. In addition, in era of globalization, reading as one of English skills has become an important role. In this era, knowledge and technology reach the rapid progress in many sectors of life such as science, business, politic, and education.
If we consider the study of English as a foreign language around the world, the situation in which most English learners find themselves reading is the main reason why students learn the language. Related to the condition of the world, where English is the language of the world, every information is provided in English. Therefore, reading has a big part in the world.
